Obviously abandoned and all alone, covered in fleas with matted hair barely covering his skin and bones, an old Sheltie slowly walked up to Cody Leightenheimer at a wood flooring factory and stared at him with his huge, pleading eyes.
“Take me home,” they said.
Barely able to muster the strength to keep standing, he fell asleep on the floor next to Cody.
Cody, moved by the dog’s plight, brought him home and took him to the vet.
Stunted, beaten, infested with fleas, sick with ulcers and utterly toothless, the Sheltie was given three months to a year to live.
But Cody and his family did not give up.
They named him Toothless and spoon-fed him every day.
After a few months, Toothless frolicked like a puppy again in the snow.
He started new doggy fashion trends.
Come Christmastime, he was waiting for Santa like everyone else.
Sometimes he got a little frisky!
He even learned how to play cards.
But most of the time he slept in the comfort of his new and loving home.
And even had slumber parties.
Nourished by daily cuddles, Toothless lived longer than anyone expected.
But even the sweetest things must pass away.
In June of 2014, while Cody and his wife held his tiny paws, Toothless drifted off to sleep and never woke up. His life proves that no act of kindness, big or small, goes unnoticed by those who need it most.
