The Humane Society recently investigated puppy mills across the country and the result has exposed some gut wrenching conditions that are typical within these facilities.

According to The Humane Society:

“A puppy mill is an inhumane, commercial dog-breeding facility in which the health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits.”

For the fourth year in a row, Missouri ranks the highest for having the most facilities at 30. Iowa came in second with 15, Kansas had 14, Ohio had 9, and Nebraska and Pennsylvania had 5 each. Nebraska significantly reduced their number from last year when they had 15. Unfortunately, Missouri’s numbers increased from 23 to 30. This list also includes a large number of repeat offenders.

According to The Humane Society:

“Only large-scale commercial facilities that breed or broker animals for resale—to pet stores for example—or sell puppies sight-unseen, such as over the Internet, are required to be licensed and inspected by the USDA because they are considered “wholesale” operations. Those that sell directly to the public face-to-face—thousands of facilities that breed and sell just as many puppies as their wholesale counterparts—are not required to adhere to the Animal Welfare Act or to any federal humane care standards.”

The alarming conditions range from extremely underweight dogs to injured and bleeding pups. While officials are making progress by revoking licenses, an astounding number of unqualified breeders still exist.
