Dog Refuses To Move From Spot It Had Been Guarding For 15 Days
A dog in southern India was found by the grave of his teenage owner.
The loyal animal, named Tommy, was close friends and virtually inseparable from his 18-year-old owner Bhaskar Shri, according to the Daily Mail.
Shri, a construction worker, reportedly died in a car accident and was buried in Chennai. Five years ago, Shri adopted Tommy and the two bonded quickly.
After Shri’s death, the animal lay by his owner’s grave for 15 days and survived without searching for food or water, despite drastic changes in weather each morning and night.
Eventually, a Blue Cross of India worker named Dawn Williams discovered Tommy by the grave.
“I first spotted the brown dog sitting on a fresh grave one evening as I happened to walk past in the first week of August, but at the time I didn’t think anything of it,” Williams said. “But on Aug. 13 I was in the area again while on a different rescue mission and saw him again. He was sitting in the same spot in the same position. It looked like he hadn’t moved for weeks.”
Williams said that Tommy appeared to be crying and was in bad shape.
“I could see he was in a disturbed condition,” she said. “He was famished and I’m certain he had tears in his eyes. I gave him water and biscuits but he refused to move. Then, with my teammates, I walked around the area and asked locals if they knew the dog.”
When Williams found Shri’s mother, Shrimati Sundari, she said the dog was happy to see another one of his owners.
“When Tommy saw her, he jumped on her and was licking her before he rested his face on her feet. It was obvious he knew her,” Williams said.
Sundari told Williams that she thought Tommy had left and found another place to live.
“She was really happy he was back,” Williams said. “She called him a loyal friend and she would keep him as a reminder of her son.”
