Young Singer’s Dynamic Version Of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” Has Everyone Talking
What is there to say about Dolly Parton that hasn’t already been said? The world-famous singer-songwriter-actress has won a staggering amount of awards and produced a record number of chart-topping albums and singles. She’s known not just for her creative achievements but also her philanthropic efforts, business acumen, and downright lovely personality. In short, it’s safe to say that the famous blonde has a place in just about everyone’s heart.
Where we might disagree, though, is on the topic of which Dolly song is her greatest. “I Will Always Love You” has always been a favorite for many, especially after Whitney Houston’s incredible version; others love “9 to 5” for its spunky message and the beloved movie of the same name. But as for me, “Jolene” will forever hold a special place in my heart. Released in 1973 on an album of the same name, the song’s plaintive message from a woman begging the beautiful Jolene to leave her man alone.
After its release, the song made its way to the top of the charts in the United States and around the world. Dolly also claims that, of all the songs she’s written, it’s the most recorded by other artists. Rock band The White Stripes and pop stars Ellie Goulding and Miley Cyrus (who is Dolly’s goddaughter) have all produced their own versions.
Young singer-songwriter Alexandra Kay has taken a stab at the hit song. The 25-year-old has been writing her own songs for a decade and began performing them after discovering her love for it after joining the speech team and drama club at her high school. She’s auditioned for American Idol, making it to the third round, and later signed a record deal, leading to her releasing an original single entitle “No More.”
